We talked with Mark Berube, Senior Vice President of Compass, to learn more about how his investing strategy is different and how he’s offering even better services with Advice Chaser. 

Q: How does your approach differ from other advisement firms?

A: We’re different because we adapt to market conditions. Our company was founded by Kevin Coppola, who was trying to find a way to make better decisions on his 401(k). He built our unique Horizon algorithm. It tests your portfolio for direction, degree, and how it affects other funds within the stock family. This is how we determine what goes into 401(k)s.

A great example of this can be seen on our website. It shows how the Horizon algorithm performed during the 2008 recession. We realized that if we didn’t pay attention to clients’ investments, they tanked. The “set it and forget it” method doesn’t work—the money needs to be managed carefully, and we’ve figured out an amazing way to do that by identifying underlying trends.

People are sometimes afraid to invest because they’re worried about losing money, but you won’t suffer huge losses if you adapt to the market conditions. We test these portfolios every five weeks because we found that that’s the ideal time to see trends appear. Whether your funds are large or small, we want your employees to succeed. 

Q: What do you love most about advising clients?

A: I love helping people achieve their goals. Money isn’t the end-all, be-all, but financial security is. Financial security makes better people and better families. I want people to have the resources to be able to say “yes” to opportunities with family and friends. I believe that’s what we at Compass provides.

I know the value of hard work—I had to start making my own money when I was twelve years old—so I really appreciate the effort that it takes for hardworking people to put money into retirement funds. I want people to reach their maximum potential and have peace of mind. 

Q: What kinds of services does Compass offer?

A: Compass Investors is an independent, privately-held provider of mutual fund and ETF investment analysis. All of our advisors are Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), and since we don’t work on commission, we are able to truly make choices that are best for our clients.

Q: What advantages did you gain by partnering with Advice Chaser?

Q: What is the most common misconception clients have about finances? 

A: One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that people don’t think that a financial advisor can help. Like everything else in life, what you put into it is what you get out of it. As far as your health goes, would you ever “set it and forget it”? Absolutely not. So why would you do that with your financial security?

There are people out there who are willing to work for your benefit. This isn’t just our job, this is our passion! This is a profession. We did so much more than just pass an exam. We genuinely want to see you succeed and be able to take care of your loved ones.
